Evelyn Lewis Walters sent me a letter in the year 2000 in which she recalled her memories of her grandparents, Sam and Nancy Cain.  I have added it in a separate blog post.  It is wonderful to have these memories about the life of Samuel and Nancy since they died before I was born.

The town of Vining,  first called West Clifton, was formed in 1877 according to the Pageant of the History of of Clifton, 1944.    Samuel and his friend rode by horseback from Illinois to check out the land and see if they wanted to live there.  They stayed and then about a year later he went back to Illinois to marry his sweetheart and bring her back to Kansas.  They were married in January of 1880 so Samuel originally came to Kansas about 1878, just after Vining became a town.

Reading in the Washington, Kansas centennial souvenir program from 1960 it states that in 1878 Vining was growing rapidly and had a grocery store, dry goods store, drug store, hotel, blacksmith shop, livery and saloon.
