Obituary Alvah James Cain: Robinson Daily News, July 28, 1952– A.J. Cain, son of Lewis and Sarah Cain, was born in Somerset, Ohio, April 14, 1860 and departed this life at his home north of Oblong July 23 1952 at the age of 92 years, 3 months, 9 days. He was the last survivor of the family who with their mother, moved from Ohio to the Oblong community when he was 9 years of age where the remainder of his long active life was spent. In 1885 he was united in marriage to Celia Ikemire and to this union six children were born — two sons and four daughters. The wife preceded him in death Aug 3 1907, one son, Claude, in June, 1936, and one daughter Isabelle Carroll July 15, 1952— just eight days prior to his passing. On January 3 1912 he was united in marriage to Eva Shinn who survives him. Beside his devoted companion he leaves three daughters, Mrs. Alta Wilson and Mrs. Maude McCoy of Oblong, Mrs. Sarah Griggs of Salem, ILL, one son Orlan L. Cain of Owensboro, KY, a stepson, Albert Shinn of Oblong and a niece Alberta Chapman of McPherson, Kansas, who in infancy was taken into the home and reared as a member of the family. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, two nephews, Lewis P. Cain of Oblong and Charles Cain of Vining, Kansas other relatives and a host of friends. For a number of years he was a member of the Prairie Grove Baptist Church later transferring his membership to the Pilgrim Holiness Church in Oblong. He was a loving father, a true friend, a good neighbor and will be sadly missed by the entire community. His very conception of life and its master motive seemed to be service, and might fittingly be expressed in the words of the poet as follows: Others, Lord, yes others, Let this my motto be; Help me to live for others, That I may live for Thee. Lord help me live from day to day in such a self forgetful way, That even when I kneel to pray My prayer shall be for others. help me in all the work I do. To ever be sincere and true. And know that all I do for you, Must needs be done for others And when my work on earth is done, And my new work in heaven’s begun, May I forget the crown I’ve won While thinking still of others.” Funeral services were held Friday, July 25 at 2:00 at the Marshall Funeral Chapel with Rev. H.J. Kemp officating, assisted by Rev. W.E. Catey. Burial was in the Wilkins Cemetery.
