Robert Gano was born about 1815 in Fayette Co. Ohio the son of Isaac and Susannah Cook Gano. He married Phoebe Newland, daughter of Nicholas Newland and Priscilla Murphy, on September 23, 1832 in Fayette Co, Ohio. She was born about 1818 in Fayette County, Ohio. She died on June 5, 1880 in Barnes, Kansas in Maplewood Cemetery.

Robert and Phoebe lived in Marshall Co, Iowa before they moved to Harrison Co, Missouri; they also lived in Wayne Co, Iowa for a number of years. Approximately 1867 they moved to Washington Co Kansas, near Ballard’s Falls. This information is in the obituary of their son, George Washington Gano in 1921.

East half of the north east quarter of section twenty eight in township three south, of range five east in the district of lands subject to sale at Concordia Kansas containing eighty acres.– Affidavit requisite of Homestead Claimant: I, Robert Gano of Kansas under the first section of the ? act of May 20 1862, do now apply ? ? claim thereto by virtue of the first provision to the second section of said act: and for that purpose do solemnly swear that I am the head of family and a citizen of the United States; that I have made actual settlement upon and have cultivated said land. Having resided thereon since the 15th day of May 1868 to the present time that no part of said land has been ? but that I am the sole bonafide owner as an ? seller, and that I have borne true allegiance to the Government of the United States. Final Proof required under Homestead Act May 20 1862: We, Isaac Gano and Harvey Gullian do solemnly swear that we have known Robert Gano for seven years last past; that he is the head of a family consisting of himself, wife and no children and is a citizen of the United States; that he is an inhabitant of the East half of the North East quarter of secion No. 28 in Township No 3 South of Range No 5 East and that no other person resided upon the said land entitled to the right of Homestead or Pre-emption. That the said Robert Gano entered upon and made settlement on said land on the 15th day of May 1868 having built a house thereon prior to said date – said house is a frame, 12 ft square one and half stories – shingle roof – one door – one window and ? and comfortable to live in, and has lived in the said house and made it his exclusive home from the 15th day of May 1868, to the present time, and that he has, since said settlement, plowed, and cultivated about 40 acres of said land, and has made the following improvements thereon, to wit: Has a stable, corral, hen house with a granary. Also a well of living water walled up – has 50 fruit and about one and one fourth acres of forest trees — & 80 rods of growing hedge fence. Signed: Isaac Gano, Harvey Gullian.
